Update at Nine Months

I just thought I'd give a little update on the puppies. All of them are doing great! Everyone is growing on schedule, temperaments are, by all accounts, fantastic, and health-wise we haven't seen anything untoward.

Stay tuned for the annual update when everyone turns a year old. Hopefully I'll be able to post photos of everyone! :)

Stung by a bee, but...

I had a friend out chop up a bunch of logs that were laying on the ground in the front yard. As he was cutting, he discovered that I have a ground hive of honey bees under one of the logs. Not such a big deal because these bees are not very aggressive - he just moved away without getting stung and was actually able to come back after they'd settled and move some of the logs out of the way.

But of course, the hive happens to be right in the area where the puppies choose to spend most of their time (go figure!). Anyway, the flashy boy sat on the hive the other night. Literally sat on it. The bees, as you can imagine, were not very happy with that state of affairs, so he got stung on the bum. He yipped and jumped up and the bees came buzzing lazily out of their hive to hover around the entrance to the hive. As I said, these are not aggressive bees so he didn't get stung again - I love honey bees for that reason!

Anyway, I checked this puppy five, ten, thirty minutes later and guess what? NO swelling! I couldn't even tell where he'd been stung....

And that, ladies and gentlemen is one of the big reasons I chose to breed Porsche to Ronin. The majority of Ronin's kids and grandkids do not have severe reactions to bites and stings.

I'm thrilled to see that trait has passed down - at least to one puppy!

Nine weeks and they're off...

Well, two of Porsche's puppies have made their way to their new homes. The flashy boy will be with us until the end of the month as his owners have work commitments until then, and boy#3 (who as yet has no name) will be staying with me.

That just leaves two more puppies to find homes - Boy #2 and Girl #2 the flashy girl. Hopefully I can find homes for them soon - they deserve to have more one on one time than I can give them.

That said, my mom spends time every day cuddling with each of the little darlings one on one! :)

Keep your eyes and ears out for a good home for one of these guys!!

Eight weeks...my oh my!

It's amazing how quickly time flies when you're having fun!! I have spent so much time with these little monsters - watching, cuddling, snuggling...and thinking. Today was vet checks and their first vaccine (parvo/distemper only) as well as assessments.

Now the hard task of deciding which puppy is staying, and where the others are going! I will be updating my website with eight week photos shortly (probably tomorrow) for everyone to see!

It's been a long day, so I'm off to bed! 4:30 am comes awfully early when the pups have to get up to pee!!

Porsche's puppies and I (and my good friend Kat) are headed down to Red Deer to have Cindy and Joanne do Puppy Aptitude Testing. It is a formal form of temperament testing that gives some addiitonal information about the puppies' temperament over and above the information that I collect during their development and eight week assessments.

It will be interesting to see what I've got! :)

I was able to get some photos of Porsche's babies the other night. I've been busy getting everything arranged for Lily's babies to go home this weekend and most nights I haven't been able to eat supper (let alone get to sleep!) before 10pm! The other night, however, I spent some time with the puppies and my camera in my (very mosquito infested, overgrown!) yard.

Puppies' first road trip

I had to run into the city today to pick up some things for the puppies that are flying to their new homes on Monday (Lily's crew), and I decided at the last minute (really - I was in the truck and decided!) to take Porsche's puppies on a road trip. Since it was going to be a quick trip, I figured what the heck?

So I packed the six little wigglers into the truck and away we went. Oh...and did I mention it was also their first time locked in a crate? /grin They did better than expected, actually. After only a few minutes of crying they settled down for a good nap and didn't wake up until I made my first stop.

When I was done picking up my dog food, I set up the x-pens beside the entrance to Bridgebrand and the Edmonton Humane Society and put the puppies out to pee and have a wee play. The first huge delivery truck that rumbled/hissed by us did give them a bit of a pause, but the following cavalcade of monster delivery trucks that followed didn't even tweak their interest.

All in all I'm very pleased with how these puppies are developing in terms of temperament - they are outgoing, sweet and feisty...just the way I like 'em! :)

Time sure is flying! Porsche's babies are HUGELY FAT...so much so that I'm going to cut back their food (I started them on food when Porsche had a bout of eclampsia, just in case). They are, however, starting to get their legs...I'm hoping in a couple of weeks they get enough leg so that their bellies stop dragging on the ground!

I took the babies outside for the first time (it's been really wet here) today - they had a blast. Didn't bat an eye at the outside things - bugs, grass, trees (you'll see that some of them took on the spruce tree in the front yard), and none of them even blinked when the wind picked up and started the door of the tarp garage flapping.

Talk about a "go forward" group of puppies!

Been a long 10 days...

Hi everyone!!

Sorry that the blogs haven't been updated for the past little while - I got sick with the flu on the July long weekend (sick for four days!) and then the following Thursday, I had to take Porsche into the vet with a mild case of eclampsia. All was well, and I've been fortunate that I was able to put the babies back on Porsche without a reoccurrence of her eclampsia.

So, I've basically been playing catch up for the past 10 days...but, the sun is shining today so I was able to get some photos of the babies...enjoy!

I moved the babies from out of the back bedroom today - they weren't terribly impressed, but as with everything they've encountered, they got over it. LOL

Today I also introduced the "litter box" - a rubbermade lid with shavings in it. Already, most of the puppies look for the shavings when they need to have a wee. Smart little babies!

We also had our first nail dremmel. They really don't like having their nails clipped (I know, I know!) but were much happier with the dremmel. :)

Porsche's babies are (sort of) up on their legs. They haul themselves up off their bellies to cross the puppy pen, take a poop and then to walk across to their starting point and slump back into dreaming slumber.

They're brilliant. LOL

The puppies had lots of visitors this weekend! Though Porsche's puppies weren't quite as busy as Lily's bunch, they got their fair share of attention too!

Christine was quite taken with the babies and got a chuckle about how the little wigglers would wiggle themselves into any fold in your clothes in an attempt to cuddle. The flashy brindle girl spent most of the visit with her head stuck up the leg of my shorts!

While Christine was over, I trimmed toenails. No dremmel for these guys yet, but clipping their nails is hard enough at this point - they're very fat, very large and very strong. They do NOT make nail trimming easy!

Porsche's puppies were a HUGE hit with my friend Sheri's three children. Helena cuddled and cuddled them, Kayle pet them and held them like a big boy would, and Victoria, the four month old little precious one wouldn't take her eyes off of them. While I was holding Victoria on my lap, with a puppy in one hand, she reached over and took a firm grip of skin and hair. Victoria massaged the puppy, holding, then letting go, for about five minutes or more. I think she liked how soft they were. :)

Other than opening eyes and growing like weeds, that's about all I have to report. I'm off to watch a movie - really loud, with lots of bass to keep the puppies occupied! Enjoy your week!

It's official - Porsche is part Jersey cow. You think I'm joking...far from it. Porsche has an honest to God UDDER for every nipple she has, and she even has a few udders where she has mammary tissue but no nipple. When she lays down on the floor, she leaves puddles. If you rub her belly, or if I check her breasts for mastitis, she squirts milk all over the floor.

Perhaps I should milk her and save on my grocery bill! Just kidding...but Porsche is an amazing mom and it is showing in her puppies.

As I've mentioned in another post, these puppies are the most vigorous puppies that I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. They are NO work. None. They just eat, get HUGE distended bellies, roll away from Porsche and crawl over to the far side of the puppy pen and sleep for hours. I'm not sure they'll ever learn to walk with the bellies they have on them!!

Their eyes are open - most of the puppies have eyes fully open with a couple of the plain boys being a touch behind in that area. Tails have come off and are scabbing up very nicely. No signs of infection, though I'm not sure these puppies would notice it if half of a leg rotted off...super healthy puppies, these.

Growing and Tails

I didn't think it was possible, but Porsche's puppies are growing even faster than Lily's babies did at this age. Just a few days after banding, the tails are already starting to drop off. It's so awesome to see how fast these puppies are growing and what a fantastic momma that Porsche is being.

Porsche has SO much milk that she is beginning to resemble a Jersey cow...when she comes out of the puppy pen, she drips milk all over the floor. I love bitches that do all the work!!

I hope to get one week birthday photos of the puppies tomorrow...thank goodness for my mom!!

Growing like weeds

These puppies are amazing...while I've had some vigorous puppies in my time, this batch takes the cake!

Their bellies are ALWAYS fat and full and they're always content and sleeping. I haven't had to coddle or "watch" any of these puppies to ensure they're properly gaining - not even one. While a lot of that has to do with Porsche and her milk supply (can you say "Jersey cow"?), it also has to do with the "urge to thrive" of the puppies.

Needless to say, I'm impressed. It's a difference that is difficult to put into words...probably the easiest way to put it is that I touch them because I want to, not because I need to. In some other litters I've whelped or dealt with, I've had to monitor the puppies to ensure they gained properly, or had to make sure I walked by the box every 15 or 20 minutes to make sure that the "slow puppy" was put on a nipple when everyone else was sleeping.

This lot? Not on your life!! What's amazing is that I thought Lily's puppies were great (and they are!)...but Porsche's puppies are putting them to shame!! At this rate, they'll be catching up to the noisy brats very soon. /grin

Well, no more babies presented themselves last night so six we have and six we're happy with. All six puppies are thriving, getting big fat bellies and growing already! Porsche is a wonderful mom and once she settles down and allows herself to get some real rest, she'll be perfect!

We did have another plain girl but though we all gave it a valiant fight, it wasn't to be. She'll be back another time to experience life more fully here on the earth. For now, she's the other side of the Rainbow Bridge smiling on her momma, her papa and her six siblings.

Don't be surprised if there's an update on numbers, but Porsche may just be working to pass a placenta or two. We'll see!!

Porsche is milking this for all she's worth...she's LAYING on top of my mom, head cradled against my mom's neck, panting and drooling. Occasionally she stops long enough to groom my mom's hand, or arm or shirt, and then her front paw but then it's back to making mom feel sorry for her.

I'll keep you all apprised of the situation as events unfold. :)

Porsche's puppies have dropped slightly and her vula is starting to swell due to hormone. We haven't had a drop in temperature yet, so puppies aren't eminent, but her body is working on it. :)

Well Porsche may not LOOK very pregnant but she FEELS very pregnant. She's as tight as a drum and *very* uncomfortable. I don't think that the weekend can come to soon for her.

Since I'm not quite ready for her to have puppies yet, she's just going to have to wait! LOL! Porsche's due date is Monday but she may run a bit later than that...but not too much later!!

So I've been admittedly distracted (and besotted) by Lily's puppies - adorable, by the way - but I decided it was to give Porsche some "face time" on her blog. :)

Things are progressing exactly as they should. Porsche looks like an overstuffed sausage and she still has almost two weeks to go. I meant to take a picture of her today but wound up playing with puppies instead. Can you blame me? Really?

I took the girls for a walk in the field tonight...Lily was happy for the break and Porsche and Vala were glad of a change of venue. Macey went home with Gramma for the night but will be back tomorrow.

Going for a walk gave me an opportunity to look at Porsche from a distance...Yup...total sausage! Please keep your fingers crossed for an easy and uneventful delivery!

...about Porsche. There's just not a lot to report. She is a total suck and she's getting thicker around the middle as time goes by. I can't decide if she's carrying a ton of puppies, or only a few. She has become heat sensitive which is unusual for her, and she looks like a sausage, but she's certainly carrying her puppies differently than Lily did.

So, while there's no doubt in my mind that Porsche's pregnant, I don't know if she's carrying two or three puppies or ten or twelve.

I guess we'll know in three weeks time, won't we? :)

A friend of mine came for a visit yesterday and said, out of the blue, "Porsche's pregnant. She's really thick and her body's changing."

...so I guess I can shut up now and just wonder HOW many puppies she has. LOL

The weather is beautiful today...time to change my clothes and take the pregnant dogs for a run! :)

There is a three to four week period where the puppies are all tucked up high, high in a bitch's tummy and she doesn't look pregnant - at all. It drives me crazy because for that three to four weeks I fuss, and worry and fume and wonder what went wrong that she didn't get pregnant.

Of course, by the time five or six weeks rolls around post ovulation, I'm like, "Oh yeah! She's totally pregnant...told you - I knew the whole time!" /grin

I just hate this period where there is no BELLY...though Porsche is getting THICK and holding onto every scrap of food I feed her. I've actually had to cut her food intake a little bit because she was getting so fat she had a DIMPLE above her tail - that's WAY too fat, even for a pregnant girl! LOL

So, Porsche's just getting a little less...not like Lily the piggy who's eating me out of house and home! :)

Ok...that's a bit of a lie. There's just no belly yet. LOL

There are, however, other signs...Porsche has turned into a really mellow girl (except for her obsession with the cats who insist on teasing her through the fence!) and her nipples have enlarged significantly - pink and soft (that's a good thing).

So just more of the same here...waiting.

Not much to report today...Porsche's doing great - still her usual funny, happy self. She's decided that she needs to make sure that Vala is all clean - she licks her eyes, her mouth, her neck. Grooming is the word for the day.

Porsche's also turned into a bit of a suck! She was a suck already but this week she'd like to be welded to my hip. She and Lily are taking turns laying at my feet while I watch TV...silly girls.

Your Biology Lesson For Today...

After attending Myra Harris' seminar not once, but twice (and wishing like hell I could have gone to see her this weekend in Calgary!), I have changed my bitch's pregnancy diet slightly.

In Myra's seminar she talks extensively about the parathyroid gland (read more about the parathyroid gland here) and its role in maintaining the body's calcium levels. When the calcium level in the blood stream drops below a certain level, the parathyroid gland releases, obviously enough, some parathyroid hormone which triggers the release of calcium from storage areas in the body, namely the skeletal system.

While most people think of calcium as "being important for bones and teeth", its biggest function in the body is maintaining muscle contraction (read more about the science here). If there is no calcium circulating through the bloodstream, there is no muscle contraction.

So...how does this apply to pregnant bitches?

What is labour??

Yes, you're right! Muscle contraction...lots and lots and LOTS of muscle contraction!

I feed my dogs a raw diet and a portion of that diet is raw meaty bones. The problem with feeding raw meaty bones during pregnancy, according to Myra, is that when you feed excess calcium (which bones have a plethora of!), there is always calcium circulating through the bloodstream as the body digests the bone. When there is always calcium circulating through the bloodstream, the parathyroid gland gets to take a break from doing its job. It gets lazy and sluggish. It goes on vacation...

So...you've fed a bunch of bone (or extra calcium for those of you who supplement during pregnancy) throughout the bitch's pregnancy. The parathyroid hormone hasn't worked in how many days/weeks/months...then the bitch goes into labour. WOW! That's a lot of muscle contraction...need more calcium...need to contract uterus to deliver puppies...

BUT!!! The parathyroid gland is still on vacation...it misses the 6am wake up call Monday morning its first day back at work. After the calcium that has been circulating in the bloodstream is used up there is none left because the parathyroid gland has been allowed to grow sluggish or inactive.

No calcium = no muscle contraction.
No muscle contraction = uterine inertia.
Uterine inertia = c-section.

So...the grand experiment! While my dogs are still on a raw diet, I have taken Porsche and Lily right off of raw meaty bones. They are eating organ meat, ground muscle meat, eggs, veggies and tripe, with tripe making up the majority of their diet.

I will be honest and say that a large part of me shudders to think that perhaps my bitches aren't getting enough calcium to make healthy babies...but then I give my head a shake and remember that tripe and liver and veggies all contain calcium. Not as much as raw meaty bones, of course, but that's the point, isn't it?

The hope is that by reducing the circulating calcium in their diet, I will be able to keep the parathyroid gland working hard throughout the pregnancy so that when the girls go into labour they will have more than enough access to calcium in their bones to deliver all of their babies naturally!

That's your biology lesson for today...I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. I think I should have been a biology teacher! :)

Green goop is good news!

Porsche got her eagerly awaited greenish discharge from her vulva this afternoon! Every bitch that I've ever bred had gotten discharge approximately ten days after they've been bred. It only lasts a day or so but it's been a sure sign of pregnancy before. Fingers crossed that holds true for Porsche as well! :)

The girl is doing well...she's been in good spirits and enjoying the early, warm spring we've been having here.

Thanks to Denice's trusty stitch job and Porsche's healthy raw diet, her incision was healed in 24 hours...I kid you not. In 24 hours the skin was sealed. Gotta love that sort of healing!!

Porsche got her BIG pot belly right on schedule so if all goes well, we should see puppies in another eight weeks or so!

Porsche's still happily playing full speed with Vala and being a HUGE suck. Sounds like good news to me! :)

Well, Porsche and I made the trek into the Uncas Veterinary Clinic yesterday morning to have her inseminated with the good "Rony-Pony" semen! Dr. Denice Schlingman of the Uncas Veterinary Clinic has been wonderful and I have had fantastic luck with her...over the course of the past ten years, Denice has given me AI litters of nine, eleven and eleven puppies. Here's hoping Porsche's implant is just as successful!!

Porsche was a bit sore from the surgery last night but is back to her happy, bouncy self this morning. The incision looks great (and is very small - good job, Denice!).

Now all we have to do is wait...

Second progesterone test and an "aha!" moment...

I took Porsche in for a second progesterone reading on Friday...the results came back and she has begun her LH surge. We'll do another progesterone on Monday and then the implant will happen either Wednesday or Thursday. Me? I'm hoping for Thursday as I already have halfthe day booked off for a medical appointment and it will mean that I don't need to make two trips to the Uncas Veterinary Clinic, which is 90+ minutes away from my house.

Oh! And the "Aha!" moment...I've been using my Draminski Ovulation Detector vigilantly over the course of the last week, but the graph that the data was giving me was all over the place. Then it occurred to me to break down the AM and PM readings into two graphs. Yup...that was all that required! The data now looks like it should.

Apparently, some bitches show changes in the electrical conductivity of their cervical mucus during the day. Porsche's conductivity is high in the morning and lower in the afternoon and evening readings. Basically, the data makes no sense when you look it as a whole but when you break it down, it looks like it should! Yeah to me for remembering that little tidbit of information in the manual!! LOL

So I took Porsche in yesterday for a progesterone test because I just wasn't sure...

$100 I find out that she's probably five to seven days away from ovulating. /sigh Oh well, on the upside, I haven't missed her! LOL

Porsche is finally in season!! Please keep the good thoughts coming our way as we prepare for our surgical AI breeding to Ronin.

It's an interesting adventure this time around...I've purchased a Draminski Ovulation Detector and it worked great for Lily's season - but this is the true test! :)

Well, there's nothing terribly exciting to report...though Porsche does appear to be preparing to come into season. She's gotten a little irritable and her vulva is starting to swell. Keep your fingers crossed that she comes into season soon! I'm looking forward to Porsche - Ronin babies running around, playing havoc with the world!

No signs of Porsche coming into season (I'm not expecting her to until around March/April) but I'm starting to get excited about the upcoming puppies. I've started putting together my whelping supplies and making plans.

I'll post when Porsche comes into season and when she's bred...as this will be a frozen semen breeding, we'll can use all the good thoughts we can get! :)

Ronin, the papa

Ronin comes to us all the way from New Zealand. His owner, Helene Owen of Ronin Boxers has been fantastic to deal with in regards to bringing over some "Roni-Poni" semen to use with Porsche, and perhaps on some of my other girls.

Ronin has a very stable, outgoing temperament. Like many boxers with European ancestry, Ronin has a lot of drive but is also a big cuddle bunny.

He is a consistent producer of many of the traits that are sorely lacking in the North American boxer population. Ronin consistantly produces correct front assemblies, solid round bone, and correct toplines. He also produces significantly better than average mouths, in terms of width, straightness and tightness.

I am very excited about the potential outcome of this breeding and hope to be able to report a successful mating in a few week's time.

Porsche is an active girl who has lots of energy. She enjoys playing and cuddling and loves to play with other dogs outside.

She is the daughter of my UK import, Rhett, who I lost at three years of age to bacterial infection that destroyed his kidneys. Just as Rhett was a very special boy, so too is his daughter a special girl.

I am very pleased to see what Porsche will produce with paired with Ronin. Who knows? If my luck holds we may even get red puppies! :)
